It was in 1976 that Bruce contacted myself and asked me to meet him and the eye witnesses on the shores of Loch Doon, near to where the Spitfire was supposed to have crashed.

However only Mr. McCormick turned up and he pointed out where he thought the aeroplane had crashed.  A few weeks later we met Mr. Bob Howatson, who also pointed out where he thought the plane had crashed.

Bob Howatson - was 12 years old when he saw the plane crash

With two independent eye witnesses, both identifying an area within 100 yard of each other, we were fairly certain we knew where to start looking. After a third witness came forward to point to where he had seen an oil slick, we were really certain we knew where to look, because the sighting was almost identical to the position pointed out by Mr. McCormick.

We made provisional plans to search a fortnight hence.
