The Loch Doon Spitfire Project

David Greenwood

This is the story of a group of men who through sheer persistence and hard work, carried out an idea to find a Spitfire.

At times the odds against finding it seemed insurmountable

This is the account of Dumfries and Galloway Sub Aqua Club's search for P7540

Bruce Robertson, the then chairman of the Dumfries and Galloway Aircraft Recovery Group, fell into conversation with a Mr E McCormick of Dalry and it transpired that he had witnessed the crash of a spitfire in Loch Doon in 1941.

Because of Bruce's contacts with the Air Ministry he was able to receive proof that a Spitfire did crash in the Loch on 25th October 1941.  He also found out that it was a Spitfire Mark IIA registered No P7540 and was part of Ayr Squadron.  The Spitfire had been piloted by a young Czechoslovakian on his first solo flight.
